How much does an EIN cost for an LLC?

The IRS does not charge for an EIN. If a formation package lists an EIN fee, separate the price of optional assistance from the federal application itself.

The IRS application is free; assistance is a separate purchase

The IRS EIN application page offers the number without an application fee. A company charging to help with that process is selling a service; its price is not an IRS charge.

In your budget, use separate rows for government payments and optional help. If a formation package already includes EIN assistance, describe that inclusion instead of adding the same service charge twice. A free EIN does not make LLC formation, state registrations or other services free.

Form the LLC first, then prepare the application

The IRS EIN guidance says to form a legal entity with the state before applying. Keep the formation record beside your application notes and check the IRS instructions for entering the business name.

This sequence creates two different records: evidence of state formation and the federal tax ID confirmation. File them separately, with the issuing agency, date and entity name. Neither record should be treated as a list of every registration the business may need.

  1. Confirm the state formation step has been completed.
  2. Review the current IRS application route and eligibility.
  3. Prepare the information the official application requests.
  4. Keep the confirmation with your business records.

Check whether the online route fits your situation

The IRS online tool has eligibility conditions, including a U.S. or U.S.-territory principal business location and a responsible party’s SSN or ITIN. It directs applicants who cannot use the online route to other application methods. Read the current IRS instructions instead of assuming every LLC can apply online.

The online application must be completed in one session; the IRS advises keeping the confirmation letter. Prepare before you start. Use the official site for sensitive information. Fiftyone does not request your taxpayer ID, collect an EIN application or submit it on your behalf.

Do not choose a paid service simply because an online search result looks official. Check the destination and what the service promises to do. If you want assistance, assess the quote on its own merits.

Do you need an EIN if there are no employees?

“LLC” and “employer” answer different questions. The IRS provides specific guidance for a single-member LLC treated as a disregarded entity: with no employees and no excise-tax liability, that entity does not need its own EIN for federal tax purposes. Banking or state tax requirements can still be a reason to obtain one. Do not extend that narrow rule to every LLC or tax classification.

If you are unsure which situation applies, check the IRS guidance and your actual entity classification before acting. Our LLC budget without employees explains why a zero headcount is not a complete tax assessment.

Use this checklist before paying for EIN help

Our planning questions for an optional service
QuestionWhat to record
What are you buying?Preparation, submission, follow-up or another specifically listed task
Is it already included? The package name and exactly one budget entry for the covered work
Who handles corrections? The service process, response times and any additional charge
What happens if the route is unsuitable?Alternative process, cancellation and refund terms from the actual contract
What is the evidence of completion? The confirmation document you expect to receive and retain

A price comparison is more useful once these answers are written down. Keep the dated quote with your LLC cost checklist, and leave uncertain charges marked as unpriced.

Put the result into your formation budget

Start with one-time and recurring LLC costs. Add any chosen assistance once, alongside its scope and payment date. Keep the state filing, address arrangements and later renewals as separate decisions.

Then build a provisional state budget to organize the listed components and outstanding questions. The planner is not an EIN application, a complete startup invoice or a determination of your tax obligations.
