LEARN · LLC & EMPLOYER COSTS
LLC startup costs vs. recurring costs
The filing price is a starting point. Build your budget by asking what is paid once, what repeats, and what depends on your business.
Fiftyone editorial guide · Reviewed November 3, 2026
Start with three separate buckets
First, list one-time government filing charges. Next, list recurring government charges and their actual schedule. Finally, list optional provider charges, such as a formation package or a paid registered-agent service. A provider package may collect a government payment, but that does not make the two charges the same service.
Keep quotes, included items and renewal dates alongside each amount. If a first-year service is included in a package, do not enter that same service again as an extra first-year payment.
Check location before comparing a filing price
Business structure and location affect where registration is required. A low formation price in one state does not establish the obligations where you actually operate. Check the official registration guidance for the formation and operating locations before treating a two-state comparison as a recommendation.
Recurring does not always mean annual
Some recorded charges repeat annually; others use a two-year schedule or a different basis. Confirm the first due date, reporting period, entity type and payment channel. Dividing a two-year payment by two can hide the amount you need when it is actually due.
In Fiftyone, model years repeat fixed 2026 assumptions. A three-year number is a planning illustration, not a prediction that laws or provider prices will stay unchanged.
Leave a visible space for unknown costs
Publication, permits, local requirements, insurance and professional help can depend on facts this planner does not know. An editable allowance is money you choose to set aside. It does not confirm an obligation, a quoted price or an exemption. An item shown as excluded is outside the displayed amount; it is not free.
Try it in the planner
- Choose a state guide and inspect its reference dates and conditions.
- Enter your team size, annual pay per employee and model years.
- Review the budget breakdown and editable allowances.
- Compare a second state using the same inputs, then inspect scope differences.
Keep salary in a separate payroll budget. A formation service, payroll service and business address solve different tasks; choosing one does not replace the others.
